Smap began in 2009 as a digital M&E tool, replacing paper surveys with mobile data collection across World Vision programmes in Asia and Africa. As deployments grew, collecting data proved insufficient: programmes needed to act on it. Between 2015 and 2020 we added a task management engine, allowing submissions to automatically trigger assigned work. By 2020 this had evolved into native case management, open/closed states, RBAC, audit trails, SMS/WhatsApp threading. In Q1 2026 we added a workflow module, making case routing and escalation logic configurable as visual diagrams. That completes the foundation. The roadmap below describes what we intend to add.
WCAG 2.2 AA compliance. WebForms will be audited and certified to WCAG 2.2 AA, covering keyboard navigation, screen reader support, contrast, and focus management. Increasingly a mandatory requirement in government procurement.
Analytics and alerting. The dashboard module will gain threshold-based alerting: configure conditions on case data and receive notifications when they are breached. Operational intelligence without external BI tooling.
ITIL service management. Formalise service management processes aligned with ITIL, covering incident management, change management, problem management, and SLA reporting. Gives enterprise and government clients the service governance framework they expect, and provides the foundation for ISO 27001 certification in 2028.
iOS case management. FieldTask is Android-only. We will assess a PWA or native iOS option to bring case management features to iOS users. Subject to demand.
Partners and open-source community. Actively seek delivery partners in target sectors — agriculture, justice, health, and enterprise — to extend reach without growing headcount. Alongside this, grow the open-source contributor base through published contribution guidelines, community forums, and a public roadmap.
Open standards. Published integrations with FHIR (health), IATI (aid transparency), and OpenReferral (social services referral networks), making Smap embeddable in sector ecosystems.
Integration. Strengthen integration with commonly used tools across target sectors, including Power BI, SharePoint, national data registers, and messaging platforms. Published API docs and webhook examples support partners building their own integrations.
ISO 27001 certification. Independent verification of information security management, the culmination of the service management work begun in 2026.
Mobile maturity. Document and photo quality checks, OCR for field entry, biometric and NFC identity verification, improved offline conflict resolution.
Additional channels. Smap already creates and updates cases from SMS and WhatsApp. This will be extended to further channels, allowing cases to be initiated or progressed from wherever the interaction happens.
No-code first. Every feature must be configurable without writing code.
Technology transfer. Clients own their systems. We build for self-sufficiency, not dependency.
Open source. SmapServer, FieldTask, and WebForms remain open source. We sustain on services, not licences.
Real-world conditions. Built for low bandwidth, shared devices, and limited IT capacity. Features that only work under ideal conditions are not features.
